You Could Do Your Own WordPress Updates
While your webhost does maintain a safe and secure environment, your website is a different story.
Once your website is built and hosted, it becomes your own responsibility to keep your site current, and it is not your original web designers job. Once they build a site their job is essentially done, without some sort of ongoing maintenance agreement. It is *not* their fault if you get hacked.
This is why we offer maintenance plans.
It’s Not Very Difficult
WordPress updates happen several times over the year, and its up to you to update the core files, as well as upgrade the outdated plugins. You can do them manually, using FTP, or you can do them from right inside of the WordPress admin, which is almost always the easiest way.
How Should You Protect Yourself?
This is a great video from one of our affiliates, Wordfence, that is well worth a look.
It’s Rare That Things Go Wrong
Have you ever done a Windows Update and had something go wrong, or updated a piece of software and had a bug? It’s rare in WordPress, but it does happen, and when it does, WordPress itself is almost never the problem.
The problems usually arise with the plugins themselves. They get outdated and insecure, and in some cases even get abandoned, and that’s by far the most common exploit. Sometimes, the problems have to do with your hosts security, old plugins sometimes stop working inexplicably.
Always Make a Backup First
When you are doing your updates, and the screen warns you to create and download a backup, you’ll be tempted to skip it… DON’T SKIP IT!
Did you know that your web host likely backs up only once every 7 days, and in many cases, never stores more than one backup. YOU have to go into your control panel and initiate additional backups and storage.
Although it’s rare, we’ve seen sites “go white” after simple updates, and when that happens, you’ll need that backup, and you’ll need to manually edit files as needed once you finally search for and locate the solution that pertains to you.
We’ve seen the weekly Sat night backup get done, only to find out a site was hacked the previous Friday, so the backup is infected too, leaving a full recovery nearly impossible.
But You’ll Likely Ignore Your Updates
Google Trends has shown continued growth in people searching for “Hacked WordPress” and similar topics, and they also forecast a steady growth. This is because these days nearly one out of every five websites on the planet runs on WordPress. 18.9% was the last industry report, and that was back in 2012!
Like Microsoft Windows, it’s become a but of a target over the years, but that’s because, like Windows, it’s become the standard. I can’t recommend WordPress enough, but I also can’t stress the importance of doing your updates.
What if You’re Already Hacked?
If your WordPress site was recently hacked, and you do not have a backup of theme files, the uploads and database, then you have to either clean the hack manually, or start over. We do not take on hacked sites for cleanup, I’m sorry. However, if you need help right now, we recommend Sucuri, where they’ll clean your site and keep it “hack free” for one year for a flat $499.
